Design & Technology
Intent
At Avenue Primary Academy we believe design and technology should stimulate pupil’s interests and develop their skills within the design and technology curriculum. We aim for pupils to develop a sense of creativity, problem-solving and practical achievement through producing and evaluating topic based projects. We teach pupils to explore a variety of media, tools and techniques. By doing this, pupils investigate and combine materials and processes to produce useful design products. Throughout the years, children are taught to build on prior skills and knowledge to develop their understanding and creative responses to design briefs. We also teach pupils to understand the role and purpose of designers, scientists and innovators working together in different times and cultures.
Implementation
The subject is taught through topic-based projects encouraging children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Each year group teaches a range of textiles, construction and cooking based projects throughout the year. The children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers by building on their skills through taught sequences.
The Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge and concepts to enable children to tackle real problems which are built on every year. It can improve analysis, problem solving, practical capability and evaluation skills. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other subjects such as mathematics, science, computing and art.
Impact
At Avenue we follow the National Curriculum for DT and make cross-curricular links wherever possible which enables the embedding of scientific thinking and enquiry. In each year group DT is taught in blocks within topics across the course of the school year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. We prepare children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world by expanding their creative thinking, problem-solving and idea development through a broad range of design opportunities.
The curriculum overview shows the learning that will take place in DT in each year group. The roadmaps show the progression of skills in DT as children move through the school.
